Exterior Architecture Vs Interior Design

This is a guest post by Elysabeth Teeko – http://twitter.com/elysateek

For many people, owning a home specifically designed to their taste is the ultimate goal – nobody wants to live in a cookie cutter house, and we all have dreams of that amazing architecture we wish to be surrounded by. Architecture should reflect client’s expectations and inner character… it should feel like an extension of their own selves. It is the ultimate approach in creating a perfect home. Architecture as of itself, however, is lost without complimenting it with Interior Design and Decoration.

Importance of Architecture

While it’s true that the architecture of a building is an extension of the person for whom it was designed, it is also rather limited in terms of the amount of expression it allows. Architecture can only say so much – after all, it is a building with a basic structure. Consider what you can observe when you walk through the building before it is occupied – while it does convey a message, it needs the inside to do more of the talking to envelope you completely.

Where Interior Decoration fits in?

Interior Decoration, on the other hand, has to be complimenting both ways. On one hand, it has to compliment the building and blend with the theme the Architect has tried to create. On the other hand, the decorations used in your home should also be an expression of who and what you are as a person. It should be an extension of your own identity – in plain sight for any visitor to see and (hopefully) gawk at in awe.

Interior design is a multi-faceted profession in which creative and technical solutions are applied within a structure to achieve a built interior environment.

The interior design process follows a systematic and coordinated methodology, including research, analysis and integration of knowledge into the creative process, whereby the needs and resources of the client are satisfied to produce an interior space that fulfills the project goals.

Interior Decoration in your home could compliment exterior Architecture – and enhance the atmosphere conveyed by the structure itself.  This may require some careful considerations, especially if you want to incorporate some of your own identity into the decorations.

Take, for example, an old building – let’s say a Castle of a few hundred years old. Inside the typical castle you are likely to find a specific style of decorations – all of which compliment the outside character of the building, and add to the complete picture. The interior creates oneness with the exterior of the castle.

Could you imagine what it would be like if the Interior design and furnishings had to be replaced by something out of say, 1960? It would change the appearance of the building to the point where it creates a whole different impression. New impressions may or may not compliment exterior architecture. The end result would depend upon some basic interior design principles, as well as the capabilities of the person who handled the project.

While Architecture itself cannot come to its full potential without complimenting decorations, the decorations will simply seem out of place if it does not compliment the architecture. It’s kind of a catch-22 situation. They are like two sides of a coin. The challenge lies in adding decorations that compliments both the building, and is also an expression of yourself as a person. Along with exterior and interior of the building, the surrounding landscape design plays an important role in enhancing the overall environment and making it more pleasant.

Fortunately, there are a number of pieces that are quite timeless, and can be used along with any form of architecture, and in any setting. These include classical furniture (many of which have been used with great success in decorating modern homes),  window blinders, ceiling lights and wall mirrors – which simply add an element of space to any building, and allows you to experiment with both natural and artificial lighting conditions.

Interior decorating is fun – especially when you have a gorgeous exterior elevation to match to. Make it the home of your dreams!?

  1. Gorgeous interior – love the way the paintings warm up the space

always seems that the reds and oranges add more heat to a white backgroound than any other color.

  2. I agree that the best approach for creating a perfect home is to make it feel like an extension of yourself. Since the architecture of a building is an extension of the person for whom it was designed, the building products are of utmost importance. I am associated with McGraw Hill Construction. They have a great directory full of building product information.

  3. Interior design can be used for many reasons. Either to suit the tastes of the home owner, or to help the home owner portray a certain look or theme to impress others. Whatever the reason, the chances for creativity is boundless. As people become more affluent and wealthy, they are able to breal away from the bonds of norm and hire a designer to create a look that sets them apart from others.

  4. My house is damaged by a High Velocity Heating System Failure last January 4, 2012 and my claim with my home insurance has been denied. In 5 days that there was nobody living in the house the person who was supposed to come to check daily only made it 1 day in the middle. The insurance also said that the attic where the furnace is located is not properly insulated. Cannot understand why after 6 years when the winter is not so bad this year that’s when the system failed. the house was inspected a month before a new insurance certificate was issued. I told the insurance about my plan to visit my very sick sister and mom back in the Phils. They never tell me anything. The house is unlivable since day 1. No contents and living accommodations will be paid to us. I still have a mortgaged in the house. I have applied for the refinancing of the house but I am afraid that it will not be enough. I am a single mom who had 2 times fight with cancer in the last 8 years. Can you please help me?
