When an architect takes part in an architectural competition and wins it, then all of a sudden he becomes a famous architect. This because the results of the competition are published in media. The works and drawings are also published and the architect becomes famous. Once an architect becomes well known, the clients approach him on their own, and he gets more works. His practice is established. Therefore, this is a good way to come to the forefront in practice.

After completing your studies you may be very eager to create fantastic architecture. But that could be possible only if some one appoints you as an architect for the work. As a professional you cannot advertise your activity. So, how would you get the work?

Usually you will get your early work opportunities only through people who know you, that is, your relatives, friends or acquaintances. Therefore, when you make up your mind to start your own practice, make it a point to call on all your relatives, friends and well-wishers. At the same time try to increase your number of acquaintances, more and more people should know that you are a practicising architect. You should lose no opportunity to make friends. To increase contacts and acquaintances, it is sometimes worthwhile to join clubs and hobby circles, like trekkers, nature lovers, music circles etc.

How to converse on a telephone in Professional Practice?
Telephone has become a common instrument for us. Even then very few of us have a proper training to talk on the telephone. Here are few suggestions to improve your telephone talk.
A. Use of ‘Hello’ to be minimum on phone.
B. When you make a call, say who do you want to talk, rather than asking to the other end “Aap kaum?” ‘Who are you’? “Hello, Kaun Bolta hai”, this is a bad manner. Instead say, “Namaskar, Harish from Popatlal & Co.; May I talk to Chimanbhai?”
C. When you receive a call in an office, irrespective of the calling person being known or unknown to you, greet him and say where from you have received the call.
“Good morning, B. P.L.Ltd” OR “Associated Architects, Namaskar”.
If a person called is not in the office at that time, the person who receives the call shall show interest in attending the call, shall not sound indifferent to the calling person. If the calling party is unknown to you, you shall softly insist upon knowing the name of the person and where from was he calling and what was it about. The person receiving the call must show in his voice interest and concern in the business the calling party has with your office.

Habit to Postpone the work
A father in the morning, while going to his work, asked his son to do certain work for him. The son, who was in junior college, was more interested in loitering in the college. So he thought he could attend to work of his father little later or may be in the afternoon. In the college, while gossiping with friends, he forgot the work of his father.
Obviously in the evening his father was disappointed with him. This habit of postponement of work shall not be your nature. “There is long time on hand to complete the submission work, so let us work on it little later”.
This is how you think most of the time. This habit of postponement of work is certainly unsuitable in your career.

Planning your work in Professional Practice
You shall develop a habit to plan your day’s work. On a piece of paper or in a small diary list up the works to be attended next day. Even before you start your vehicle, you shall have a list of visits you intend to do in a round. Towards the evening before closing the office, it must be your practice to take a ‘work audit’, works attended shall be ticked and those not attended or incomplete shall be carried over for the other day and shall be listed afresh.

Importance of Punctuality in Work
This is a great virtue to be present on the appointed time. The habit is developed by attending the lectures in the college on time. To give a time for a meeting or a site visit and not to be present there on time creates a bad impression. It should be the other way. You as an architect shall be so particular about the time that others around you shall be alarmed about it.
Do not forget to take into account the distance and the possible time required to commute through the traffic on the street. You must start on time. Do not get into habits of giving lame excuses. It is no good. In case you are late do not forget to say “sorry for the delay”.
If you have given a time to meet someone in your office, not even by mistake you shall be away from your table at that given time. If the appointment has to be postponed or cancelled, you shall do so well in advance. To avoid confusions and to be punctual, one must develop a diary habit.
While agreeing to an appointment or giving time to others refer to the diary. So that overlapping of the appointments can be avoided. One more point shall be noted while giving time to others for a meeting in your office. You shall keep sufficient time gap between the two successive appointments. You must take into account the time, you may require for the meeting with the previous person. If a visitor arrives at an appointed time, he shall not be required to wait in the reception. You shall welcome him on the meeting table immediately.

Address | Aspect of Personality Development
When you meet a person or when you come across a person known to you, you should greet him. That is considered as good manners. Most of you have complex in mind or are not trained at all in your young age. Depending upon your relation with the person such as senior or junior, older or younger, colleague or friend, you shall say Namaskar or good morning, Hi or Hello. Bu to ignore a person, particularly your senior, is ill manners.
When you come across a person older to you in an informal or formal get together you should approach to him and greet him. “How do you do” shall be replied by saying “How do you do” or “How are you sir?” shall be replied as “fine! Thank you”.
